Giving back to the community
As a firm supporter of adult education, I have also done a lot of pro-bono work for The Gemmological Association of Australia (www.gem.org.au) who are a wonderful not for profit organization within the jewellery industry and passionate about jewellery and gemstone education.
Gandhi said "Be the change you wish to see in the world". If you wish the world was more altruistic, be more altruistic yourself. Giving your time or money to a charity that you are personally passionate about can be very fulfilling. I donate to many different charities, but as I am such a huge animal lover, I would like to give them a voice here:
If I ever lost my eyesight, I think the greatest gift I could be given is a companion such as a dog trained by The Seeing Eye Dog Association of Australia (www.seda.org.au).
Melbourne Animal Rescue (www.melbourneanimalrescue.org) rescues and re-home dogs and cats who are no longer wanted, or are in death row at Victorian pounds. They do this via their dedicated network of foster carers – of which, I am one.
“The greatest gift you can give to others is the gift of unconditional love and acceptance.” Brian Tracy
Movember (http://au.movember.com) I do love a good 'mo - particularly for a good cause. Here are the handsome 'Mo-Bros' I sponsored
Now, this is by no means a sponsored ad or a guilt trip, simply something to think about. Sales is a profession where our skill and our attitude can usually have a positive influence on our income, and I know how good it feels to give some of it back. I choose to highlight the above 2 companies to give the animals a voice they don't have. There are hundreds of charities out there. Pick one that you're passionate about, do your research and have a think about giving them a few dollars a week or volunteering some of your time. The more you help others, the more they will want to help you – and you never know when you may need some help!
